米BuzzFeedでデータサイエンティストを務めるMax Woolf氏が手がけた、AI（人工知能）を使って自動生成した架空のポケモンの画像約200種類が話題になっている。
今回公開した画像はすべて、「ポケットモンスター」公式の画像を学習したAIによって生成されている。Woolf氏は自身のTwitterアカウントにおいて、これらの画像の制作について「すべてのポケモンの画像を眺めてから、自分で生成するように指示した。その結果がこちらだ（冗談ではなく、本当にそうして作った）」と述べた。
今回の画像生成に用いたのは「DALL·E（ダリー）」のロシア語版「ruDALL-E」だ。DALL·Eは言葉を入力するだけで、それっぽいイラストや写真を生成できるニューラルネットワークだ。「鏡に映ったサングラスを見つめるピカチュウ」や「チュチュを着て犬を散歩させる大根の赤ちゃん」といった言葉を入力すると、それらの言葉にふさわしい画像を自動生成する。
